Engineering is one of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship's highest-priority tracks, and France is one of the few destinations where the scholarship unlocks access to an education system ranked consistently among the top five in the world for engineering sciences. From the two-century-old École Polytechnique to the modern INSA and Université de Technologie networks, France offers Saudi students a uniquely competitive, state-accredited engineering diploma, the Diplôme d'Ingénieur, that carries the grade of a European master's degree and opens doors in aerospace, energy, construction, AI, and the industrial transformation at the heart of Vision 2030.
But the French engineering system is also one of the most distinctive, and most misunderstood, in the world. It runs on a parallel track to university bachelor's and master's programs, uses a competitive exam system known as concours, and requires early strategic choices that Saudi students rarely encounter in secondary school. This guide walks through every real pathway, CPGE, post-bac integrated programs, international admissions tracks, and university-based engineering masters, with honest expectations on cost, duration, language, and Safeer coverage for the 2026-2027 cycle.
Why France for engineering?
France holds a globally recognized position in engineering education. École Polytechnique, CentraleSupélec, Mines Paris, PSL, Télécom Paris, ENPC, and ENSTA Paris sit near the top of every international ranking for engineering and technology. Beyond the elite institutions, the country counts more than 200 engineering schools accredited by the CTI (Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur), a state body whose accreditation guarantees that any French Diplôme d'Ingénieur meets the same rigorous national and European standards.
For Saudi students, the draw is practical as well as prestigious. French engineering degrees are recognized by the Saudi Ministry of Education and the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE), directly relevant to Vision 2030 priority sectors (NEOM, Red Sea Global, Qiddiya, PIF-backed industrial programs, Saudi Aramco, SABIC), and taught in institutions that combine deep theoretical science with mandatory industrial internships. Most schools offer at least one English-taught track in their final two years, and several flagships now run full engineering masters fully in English.
The French engineering system in 2026
The heart of French engineering education is the Diplôme d'Ingénieur. This is a 5-year program (3 + 2, or integrated over 5) delivering a Bac+5 qualification equivalent to a European master's. It is not a bachelor's plus a separate master's; it is a unified curriculum accredited by the CTI, and holders are entitled to use the protected title Ingénieur diplômé.
There are three main pathways to reach this diploma: the historic CPGE route, the post-bac integrated route, and the international admissions route for foreign students like Saudi candidates.
Pathway 1: CPGE (Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles)
CPGE is the traditional, and still the most prestigious, path into French engineering. After the baccalaureate, students enroll in a two-year intensive preparatory program (two years of what the French call "prépa scientifique") at selected secondary schools or universities. These classes are famous for their intensity, typically 35 to 45 hours per week of advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering sciences, and French philosophy essay.
The CPGE tracks are:
- MPSI → MP (Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Sciences): the mathematics-heavy track, leading to the most competitive concours.
- PCSI → PC (Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Sciences): physics and chemistry focus, strong for chemical and materials engineering schools.
- PTSI → PT (Physics, Technology and Engineering Sciences): applied and hands-on track, strongly represented in mechanical and industrial engineering.
- BCPST (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences): for agronomic engineering, veterinary, and geosciences schools.
At the end of the second year, students sit national competitive exams, the concours, that rank them across tens of thousands of candidates. The top ranks enter the elite schools:
- Concours X-ENS: leads to École Polytechnique ("l'X"), the École Normale Supérieure, and ESPCI Paris.
- Concours Centrale-Supélec: CentraleSupélec and the École Centrale network (Lyon, Lille, Nantes, Marseille), plus Supélec.
- Concours Mines-Ponts: Mines Paris, PSL, École des Ponts, ISAE-SUPAERO, Télécom Paris, ENSTA Paris.
- CCINP and e3a-Polytech: grouped concours feeding a large network of CTI-accredited public engineering schools.
CPGE is academically brutal but opens the doors to the world's best engineering institutions. For Saudi students, access to French CPGE is possible but requires a very strong scientific baccalaureate, fluent French, and acceptance into a specific prépa, typically through Campus France or a direct agreement. We recommend CPGE only for candidates who are comfortable with near-native French before arrival.
Pathway 2: Post-bac integrated programs (5 years in one school)
Many engineering schools in France now admit students directly after the baccalaureate and run a 5-year integrated curriculum. This is the most practical path for most Saudi students, because it avoids the CPGE bottleneck while still delivering the same CTI-accredited diploma.
The largest and most relevant networks are:
- INSA (Institut National des Sciences Appliquées): seven campuses (Lyon, Toulouse, Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg, Centre Val de Loire, Hauts-de-France), strong international orientation, dedicated admission track for foreign students (INSA International Admission).
- UT (Universités de Technologie): Compiègne (UTC), Troyes (UTT), Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM). Research-intensive, project-based learning, close ties to industry.
- Polytech network: 15 engineering schools embedded in public universities (Polytech Paris-Saclay, Polytech Sorbonne, Polytech Nice, Polytech Marseille, and others), offering post-bac entry through the Geipi Polytech competitive exam or international admission.
- ECE, EPITA, EPITECH, ESILV, ESME, ESTP: private post-bac engineering schools, often in Paris, some fully anglophone tracks, higher tuition fees.
- ICAM, ESEO, ESTACA: specialized private schools in mechatronics, electronics, and aeronautics.
Pathway 3: International admission to the final 2-3 years
For Saudi students who already hold a scientific bachelor's degree or have completed two years of a science-intensive university program, most French engineering schools offer direct entry into their third or fourth year through international admission. This is the pathway many Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and KAUST students use after their bachelor's year.
These admissions are typically dossier-based (transcripts, recommendation letters, language certificates, motivation letter, and an interview), and they lead to the same final Diplôme d'Ingénieur. Flagship programs at CentraleSupélec, Mines Paris, École Polytechnique (Ingénieur Polytechnicien), INSA Lyon, and ENSTA Paris all run dedicated international admission cycles every spring.
The full curriculum: from bac to engineer
Whichever pathway you choose, the French engineering curriculum follows a consistent structure, credited by the CTI and compatible with the European LMD framework (Licence-Master-Doctorate).
| Cycle | Years | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Preparatory cycle | Years 1-2 | CPGE (in a lycée) or prépa intégrée (within the school). Mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering sciences, computer science, languages. |
| Engineering cycle, Year 3 | Bac+3 / L3 | Core engineering foundation: mechanics, thermodynamics, signals and systems, numerical methods, programming, management and economics. |
| Engineering cycle, Year 4 | Bac+4 / M1 | Specialization track begins: aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, software, chemical, energy, biomedical, etc. First major internship (3-4 months). |
| Engineering cycle, Year 5 | Bac+5 / M2 | Deep specialization, optional international exchange, end-of-studies project (PFE), and a final 6-month industrial internship. |
| Optional 3rd cycle | Bac+8 | PhD (doctorat) in a CNRS, CEA, or university lab for research-track careers. |
Specializations in demand for Vision 2030
Saudi students on Safeer frequently target specializations aligned with Vision 2030 priority sectors. In France, these include:
- Energy and petroleum engineering: IFP School (Rueil-Malmaison), Mines Paris, ENSG.
- Aerospace and aeronautics: ISAE-SUPAERO, ENAC, IPSA, ESTACA.
- Civil engineering and construction: École des Ponts, ESTP, INSA Lyon, ENTPE (for NEOM-scale projects).
- Computer science, AI, data: Télécom Paris, Epitech, Epita, INSA Lyon informatique, ENSIMAG Grenoble, CentraleSupélec (AI track).

The admission path for Saudi students
Saudi candidates applying from Saudi Arabia reach French engineering schools through one of three channels: Parcoursup, the international admission services of individual schools, and the mandatory Études en France Campus France procedure.
Eligibility requirements
- High school diploma: a Saudi general secondary certificate (Tawjihi) with strong grades in mathematics and physics. Competitive post-bac schools typically expect an overall average of 85% or higher. Top engineering tracks (CPGE, INSA, UT) often ask for 90%+.
- French language proficiency: DELF B2 minimum for francophone programs. For CPGE, most schools require B2 with C1 strongly preferred. English-taught programs at CentraleSupélec, École Polytechnique, and some INSA tracks accept IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 90 as an alternative.
- Campus France procedure: mandatory for non-EU students applying from Saudi Arabia. The procedure opens in October for the following September intake. See our student visa guide for Saudi nationals.
- Dossier and motivation letter: engineering schools look for a clear scientific project, a demonstrated interest in a specialization, and evidence of extracurricular engagement (robotics clubs, olympiads, internships). See our motivation letter guide.
- Entrance tests and interviews: many schools add a written admission test (mathematics, physics, logic) and an oral interview conducted in French or English.
Timeline for a 2027 intake
If you are targeting a September 2027 entry into a French engineering school, a realistic 18-month calendar looks like this:
- October 2026: Campus France registration opens. Create your profile, draft your project, select target schools.
- November-December 2026: Finalize DELF B2 / DALF C1 (or IELTS/TOEFL for anglophone tracks). Request academic transcripts and certified translations.
- December 2026 - January 2027: International admission platforms of engineering schools open (INSA Group, Polytech, Groupe Centrale, Mines Paris, etc.). Parcoursup opens mid-January for post-bac tracks.
- February-March 2027: Submit full dossiers. Entrance tests (mathematics + physics) conducted online or at French alliances in Riyadh/Jeddah.
- April-May 2027: Interviews (online for most international candidates). Admission decisions begin in waves.
- May-July 2027: Final admission confirmations. Safeer coordination: validate scholarship activation once academic offer is confirmed.
- July-August 2027: Visa application at the French embassy in Riyadh. Accommodation booking (CROUS or private). Pre-departure.
- September 2027: Arrival in France. Onboarding weeks, orientation, start of the engineering cycle.
For Saudi students on Safeer, align this timeline with the Safeer month-by-month calendar; the 2027 cycle will follow a very similar structure.
Language: French, English, or both?
Engineering in France is friendlier to English speakers than medicine is. A growing number of French engineering schools teach their third-year onwards entirely in English, in particular:
- École Polytechnique (Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program, bilingual, with several English-taught tracks in the last two years).
- CentraleSupélec (Engineer Program international track, fully English).
- INSA Lyon and INSA Toulouse (several fully anglophone masters in the final two years).
- Télécom Paris (anglophone masters in data science, AI, cybersecurity).
- Mines Paris, PSL (international engineering track in English).
- École des Ponts (master's in civil engineering, transport, environment, English tracks).
That said, living in France, managing your administrative life, and completing an industrial internship in a French company all require functional French. We strongly advise all Saudi students to reach at least a DELF B2 level by the start of their engineering cycle, even if their degree program is formally in English.

Costs, scholarships, and Safeer coverage
Tuition fees
Engineering schools in France fall into two broad categories when it comes to cost:
- Public engineering schools (Polytechnique, Mines, Ponts, INSA, Polytech, UT): official state-set fees. For non-EU students in 2026-2027, this is typically 2,770 EUR for a bachelor-level year and 3,770 EUR for a master-level year, with some schools choosing to waive differentiated fees and charge the standard French rate (around 600 to 800 EUR).
- Private engineering schools (ECE, EPITA, EPITECH, ESILV, ESME, ESTP, ICAM): fees range from 8,000 EUR to 13,000 EUR per year, occasionally higher for specialized programs like EPITECH's fully anglophone international track.
- Grandes écoles in the restricted-admission tier (Polytechnique, HEC-engineering partnerships): specific entry fees may apply on top of the above.
Living costs
Budget approximately 1,000 to 1,500 EUR per month in Paris (rent, food, transport, insurance), or 800 to 1,100 EUR per month in regional engineering hubs like Lyon, Toulouse, Grenoble, Compiègne, or Strasbourg. Engineering cities outside Paris often have lower rents, which adds up over five years. See our living in France as a Saudi student breakdown for the full budget.
Safeer scholarship coverage
Engineering is among the priority specialties of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship. Eligible Saudi students benefit from:
- Full tuition coverage for all five years, including at private CTI-accredited schools (subject to Safeer committee validation of the program).
- A monthly stipend calibrated for the French cost of living.
- Housing allowance.
- Health insurance coverage.
- Round-trip air travel per academic year.
Safeer, however, does not replace the academic admission process, you must secure admission to a CTI-accredited school before the scholarship activates. Read our full Custodian Scholarship 2026 eligibility guide, and our list of scholarships for Saudi students in France for supplementary funding options (Eiffel, regional grants, school-specific scholarships).
Career prospects after graduation
A French Diplôme d'Ingénieur opens three main career paths for Saudi graduates:
- Returning to Saudi Arabia: the vast majority of Saudi engineering graduates return home. French degrees are well-established in the Kingdom through the Saudi Council of Engineers accreditation and through long-standing industrial partnerships (Thales, Dassault, Schneider Electric, Alstom, Total Energies, Veolia). Graduates often join Saudi Aramco, SABIC, Ma'aden, SEC, STC, and Vision 2030 giga-projects.
- Working in France or the EU: a French engineering diploma allows up to 12 months of job-search residence after graduation (APS, Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour), extendable through employment. Engineers can then apply for a multi-year talent passport (Passeport Talent). The diploma is recognized throughout the European Union.
- PhD and academic research: graduates can pursue a PhD in a French CNRS, CEA, or university lab, often fully in English. Several Saudi students use this path to return to KAUST, KAU, or KSU as academic researchers.
Is engineering in France right for you?
French engineering is a strong choice for Saudi students who:
- Have strong baccalaureate results in mathematics and physics (ideally 85%+).
- Are curious about a full-fledged engineering-sciences culture, not just applied technology.
- Want a globally portable, state-accredited master's-equivalent degree.
- Are willing to invest in French language learning, even when studying in English.
- Plan to work in Vision 2030 sectors or in international industrial groups.
It may be less suitable for students who want a fast, purely applied 3-year bachelor's, in which case French university bachelor's and master's programs (Licence-Master) may be a better fit, or for those who prioritize an immediate job market entry over academic depth.
Next steps
If you are considering a French engineering degree for the 2027-2028 entry, the most useful decisions to make now are:
- Map your target pathway. CPGE + grandes écoles concours, direct post-bac integrated program, or international admission after a Saudi bachelor's? Each has a different profile, timeline, and cost structure.
- Shortlist 4 to 6 target schools. Include a mix of tier-1 (Polytechnique, CentraleSupélec, Mines, Ponts), solid mid-tier (INSA network, UT network, École des Ponts ParisTech), and safety options (Polytech network, private schools with Safeer-eligible programs).
- Secure your French language trajectory. Book a DELF B2 exam within 6 months. If you plan an anglophone track, also prepare IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 90.
- Start technical preparation early. Engineering admission tests emphasize mathematics and physics at French baccalaureate specialty level. Plan supplementary preparation in calculus, linear algebra, mechanics, and electromagnetism.
- Align Safeer and academic admission. Submit your Safeer file in parallel with your school applications. A late scholarship validation can delay your visa by weeks.
